Carea Cladding Provides Top Class Finish at College

At the new £74 million Waterfront Campus for Kirklees College in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, approximately 1,500m2 of Ardal cladding from Carea has helped to create a stylish dark-grey façade for the facility’s new Learning Resources Centre (LRC).

Designed by global architecture, urbanism and design practice Broadway Malyan and built by main contractor Allenbuild, the new 24,000m2 college centre forms a key part of the Waterfront complex – a mixed-use development project for Kirklees Council. Once complete, the campus building willprovide 16,000 students with 21st century learning facilities and resources from a nine-storey ‘multi-block’ of classrooms and the cube-shaped LRC.

With environmental performance and an attractive finish two key requirements at the project, it was crucial that the cladding system complemented the scheme’s overall aesthetic whilst contributing to the building achieving its targeted BREEAM rating of ‘excellent’ for low environmental impact. For this, Carea’s Ardal cladding with Shell finish was specified in a dark grey, speckled Basalte.

Manufactured from cutting edge exclusive mineral composite developed over thirty years by the company’s expert technicians, Carea cladding panels provide excellent thermal efficiency and eliminate cold bridging. Comprising around 95% natural minerals – they offered a highly sustainable choice which would provide the performance benefits required to help the building achieve the ‘excellent’ BREEAM rating.

Offering such excellent insulation levels, the Carea panels will play a pivotal role in the building’s long term thermal efficiency, lowering its heating costs and aiding sustainability – vital for meeting building regulations and the demands of all contemporary education projects.

Available in over 30 different shades and a range of textures, Carea panels can also be supplied in a variety of sizes. Carea cladding is supplied with specially designed horizontal rails so they can be easily fixed to vertical brackets.

In January 2013, the new Waterfront Campus will replace Kirklees College’s current building on Huddersfield’s New North Road. With some 230 rooms of cutting edge learning facilities, as well as the stylish and high performance cladding system from Carea, the centre will provide state-of-the-art learning facilities for many years to come.
